The OHM collects, preserves, and makes accessible items of all formats that provide an understanding of Orwell and its growth over time. The best collection is built
by the entire community—its writings, records, images and artifacts—and provides the opportunity to not only encounter the personal experiences
and viewpoints of our neighbors, but also to understand how they relate to communities beyond Vermont.
The OHM holds artifacts, publications, photographs, and handwritten and typescript accounts that reflect the interests and activities of Orwell families, community organizations, and businesses.
Included are historical overviews, genealogical studies and cemetery records, business ledgers and journals, personal diaries, and family correspondence.
There is an extensive collection of military uniforms and realia,
donated by Orwell veterans, covering the Civil War through the Vietnam War, and a selection of women’s dresses from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries.
“There is always more to learn: historical accounts are not definitive, and revelations are found in unlikely places. The Orwell Historical Museum is committed to providing resources that inform your interests.”
